S2M technology is based on a very simple principle : Servo control using electromagnetic forces. Electromagnetism and electronic control are the main specialist skills involved.

Magnetic bearings function through electromagnetic forces which support the rotor. Motors also function through electromagnetic forces which act on the rotor and cause it to rotate. Electronic control of the electromagnetic forces plays an essential role :

• to stabilise the rotating shafts in the centre of the bearings
• to control the speed and power of a motor (generator)

The following specialities have to be perfectly understood :

• electromechanics (magnetic flux, resistance of materials, dynamics, thermic)
• sensors (accuracy is vital)
• UPS
• signal processing, servosystems (sturdiness is essential)
• power electronics
• management and transmission of information
