Air cycle cooling is a clean technology that eliminates environmentally harmful refrigeration fluids. It is a proven solution within the aircraft industry.

Liebherr, a German company well known in the aircraft air conditioning industry (Airbus), has developed this technology for rail applications.

Operating parameters of an air conditioner designed for a 70 passenger vehicle are as follows :
- 550 kg (1,212 lbs)
- cooling power 30 kW (40 HP)
- heating power 35 kW (47 HP)
- air flow inside the vehicle
- 2,800 m 3 /h (98,805 ft 3 /h)
- inner temperature 25°C (77°F).

The advantages of this new technology are numerous :
- elimination of all fluids: refrigeration, lubricant, antifrost
- reduction of mechanical components
- weight reduction
- reliability increase
- easier maintenance.

magnetic bearings_air condition applicationsThe heart of the air conditioner is a motorized turbine equipped with an S2M variable speed synchronous motor and S2M magnetic bearings.

 

In addition to the passenger cabin air conditioner, Liebherr also designs air distribution systems for other train locations such as the conductor station, electronic control systems, and data transmission systems.

This unique product, which will be serially produced in the near future, is interesting not only for high speed trains but for rail transport in general.
