High speed milling spindle system developed by S2M
Thanks to S2M PM motor/generator development, High speed milling spindles system was conceived to target the aerospace industry. One of the advantages is represented by the usual fatigue factors of a spindle which have thus disappeared. MTBF is dramatically increased (over 40,000 hours).
S2M High speed milling spindles system was tested several times. Thus, many Crash tests were done at ENIM (France) laboratory, in June 2001. The result: direct penetration of a 25 mm diameter milling tool in plain metal (depth of cut 25 mm) at a feed rate of 10 m/min. This kind of test is extremely severe for a machine tool spindle and reproduces extreme operating conditions on high speed machining centers.
There is no damage on the S2M spindle: shaft geometry is intact. The spindle can restart immediately to machine parts as usual.
